Black Sand House

Living on the volcano

The challenge

To design a villa on the lava flows of Réunion Island, at the foot of the Piton de la Fournaise — an exceptional and challenging site that required an architecture capable of coexisting with the raw power of volcanic nature.

The design response

The concrete structure forms a bridge over the ash-covered ground — the house does not touch the earth, it hovers above it. A double skin made of photosensitive glass filters and modulates the intense light of the Indian Ocean. Fully energy-autonomous thanks to photovoltaic and geothermal inputs. Full mission: concept, project development, general engineering, fine-tuning, and construction site supervision.
